Job Description:
The Traffic Safety Center (TSC) at UC Berkeley is seeking a Director. Founded in 2000, the TSC has undergone significant growth. Some $2 million in grants pass through it on an average year. It is housed jointly at the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS), an organized research unit, and the School of Public Health (SPH). TSC principals work closely with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and federal traffic safety programs in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Among recent high-level projects TSC has advised Caltrans, in its annual report to the federal government, detailing of its 5% most dangerous road segments, on which receipt of highway funds is contingent. TSC also administers two large grant programs for OTS, coordinating the award and spending of more than $5 million in funds per year to local law enforcement agencies. This position will report directly to the Director of ITS but will oversee projects and staff in both ITS and SPH. The position is a non-senate academic research appointment with the opportunity to hold a Principal Investigator status.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director will provide overall guidance for the Center, supervising a staff of currently 10 researchers and administrative personnel, and a group of graduate and undergraduate student research assistants.

  • Maintain a high-profile research program in areas related to traffic safety as an engineering and/or public heal issue.
  • Sustain current projects and develop new extramural funding and resources for basic and applied research.
  • Publish papers in peer review publications and present results at scientific meetings.

Specific areas of research can include driver behavior, highway design, collision analysis and statistical methods.

Requirements & Qualifications:
The candidate shall have a doctoral degree in transportation engineering, epidemiology, public health, or a closely related field. Extensive knowledge and experience in traffic safety or injury epidemiology methods is required. The candidate must have strong technical communication and writing skills and should demonstrate an ability to lead, coordinate and manage research projects and develop research proposals.

Demonstrated academic achievement with an established record of successful research and publications is required. Experience with use of the Web and other new media to communicate research findings and encourage interaction from a broad range of stakeholders is also preferred.

Travel required to Sacramento and around the state as well as attendance at conferences at least three or four times a year.
