 Jennifer,
I had forwarded your question to someone here at NJDOT on 2/10/04. Did
someone ever get back to you from NJDOT? If not, is this info still
needed? Before I badger this person for not responding, figured I
better check to make sure that he didn't just leave me out of the loop
and/or that you or patron still want a reply.

 HI to all,

Does anyone have any ideas where I can get 10K reports for United Airlines from 1988 backwards 10 years. The SEC site only goes from 1993 forward, and I have a print one for 1991.

 TIA

The ASCE Publication Department is always looking for ways to enhance researching capabilities of the Civil Engineering Database. Here are the latest enhancements:

· All abstracted CE Database records are searchable in Google.

· We have added more than 400 records of books published by ASCE, making the book records section complete back to 1927.

· Journal title field has been added for searching. This new field searches individual journal titles back to 1956.

As you probably know, the Midwest Transportation Knowledge Network
(MTKN) worked with the National Transportation Library and OCLC to
develop a group catalog of transportation libraries, accessible to
anyone on the internet, that went live on March 1 (BTW, kudos to
everyone involved, especially Nelda Bravo and the NTL for providing seed
money and leadership).

A necessary element for the group catalog is a name and a shortname.
After considerable discussion amongst MTKN members, "Transportation
Libraries Catalog" and "TransCat" evolved as the prefered choices.
Unfortunately, no sooner did the product go live than we were informed
the shortname, "TransCat," conflicted with a product of Canadian
transportation libraries, TRANSCAT PLUS
(http://www.rose-net.co.ir/products/PRODUCTS1/SP/transcat.htm). We
are now in search of a new name for the group catalog.

A discussion on this topic has been carried on for the past couple of
days on the MTKN e-mail list. It was suggested that the discussion
should be carried on in a wider group and involve participants outside
MTKN. To that end, here's a list of the proposed alternatives so far
presented, in alphabetic order:

NTL Move or NTL Travel - "Linking researchers and knowledge to meet the
world's transportation needs"
NTL Move or NTL Travel - "Moving you toward the information (knowledge)
you need."
TranBase
TranCat USA
TranLine
TranNet
Trans911
TransAgnoscere (Transportation Knowledge)
TransAuxilium
TransBase - Transportation KnowledgeBase
TransBiblio
TransCodex
TranSelect - Selected Resources in Transportation
TransGnoste
TransLiber
TransMovere (Moving Transportation)
TranspIRE - Transportation Information Resorce Exchange
Transport Select
Transportation Select

I have elected not to include my favorite proposal that stuck (so to
speak) to the "cat" theme (being the most creative, if not the most
useful from a marketing standpoint), "HAIRBALL - Helping Agencies In
Research by Actively Locating Literature."

I would like to know if you have a preferred alternative of those
presented or might be able to suggest a short name, long name or both
that might also be considered for the product. In case you haven't seen
it, you can connect to it at www.mtkn.org, or ntl.bts.gov, among
others.

Thank you for your kind assistance and advice!

Is it absolutely necessary to have a short, catchy type of name? I'm
thinking of all the potential users (after all,I understand that this is
available to everybody who has internet, at this point, anywhere in the
world) who may be weary of trying to figure out what a short, catchy type of
name actually means. I like "Transportation Libraries Catalog". The "byline"
can briefly summarize what it is, what libraries currently are included,
etc. etc. Most people (esp. non-librarians) know that libraries have
catalogs and what that implies. The name is generic enough to include US and
maybe other countries' libraries--after all, OCLC is definitely
international, and a goal would be to have as complete an international
catalog as is possible.

By the way, this is an absolutely amazing, terrific, outstanding
development. From my vantage point (of being in the trenches for a very long
time with resources of varying usefulness), it is almost beyond belief. I
hope all transportation librarians not only use it as a matter of course,
but add a link to their internal intranet homepages for staffs, etc. etc.
etc. I really have to bow down in praise to Nelda and all the MTKN folks who
put this together.

Maryanne is right...who cares about the name, this thing rocks!

Special thanks to Nelda for her tireless efforts to make TransCat a reality. For those who are not aware, Nelda and the staff of the NTL have expended an unbelievable amount of time and energy to make this a reality. Not to mention money. Charter members of TransCat have had their way paid by Nelda, and that will last until the end of February 2004. Simply put, if it were not for the financial support of Nelda using NTL funds, this would not exsit.

We should call it Nelda! Ok, how about NeldaCat.

Seriously, the other big player here is OCLC, who found a way to create an affordable search tool that provides a fast, simple way to search the holdings of all participants. Right now that's over 300,000 records representing over 400,000 actual holdings. Stay posted. Those numbers will grow.

If you are running a transportation library (anywhere on planet earth) that does not participate in OCLC, you now have some nice ammunition to help make that happen. By the end of the year, you will have even more ammo. Please consider joining...

If you work in a transportation library that participates in a limited way in OCLC but parts of your collection that you wish were in OCLC aren't yet, this is excellent ammunition to help make that happen. Please consider joining...

If you work in a transportation library that already does all these things but are still on the fence, call Nelda and talk to her. Your return on investment will become obvious in ways that can be quantified. Again, the more libraries join, and the more records are contributed, the more powerful this tool becomes, the more your library is valued, the more you get for your money, and the more you "maximize" $ already spent on OCLC cataloging.

For those of you in the rest of the country (and anywhere on planet earth) who do not understand the difference between MTKN and TransCat (or whatever we are calling it tomorrow), please understand that MTKN and TransCat are two separate entities.

Repeat, MTKN and TransCat are NOT the same thing.

If you want to join MTKN contact Jerry Baldwin.

If you want to join TransCat, call Nelda Bravo.

Now, back to the name...after careful consideration, the only logical name should be an unpronounceable symbol. Or perhaps "The catalog formerly known as TransCat."

As you probably know, the Midwest Transportation Knowledge Network
(MTKN) worked with the National Transportation Library and OCLC to develop a
group catalog of transportation libraries, accessible to anyone on the
internet, that went live on March 1 (BTW, kudos to everyone involved,
especially Nelda Bravo and the NTL for providing seed money and leadership).

A necessary element for the group catalog is a name and a shortname.
After considerable discussion amongst MTKN members, "Transportation
Libraries Catalog" and "TransCat" evolved as the prefered choices.
Unfortunately, no sooner did the product go live than we were informed the
shortname, "TransCat," conflicted with a product of Canadian transportation
libraries, TRANSCAT PLUS
(http://www.rose-net.co.ir/products/PRODUCTS1/SP/transcat.htm). We are now
in search of a new name for the group catalog.

A discussion on this topic has been carried on for the past couple of days
on the MTKN e-mail list. It was suggested that the discussion should be
carried on in a wider group and involve participants outside MTKN. To that
end, here's a list of the proposed alternatives so far presented, in
alphabetic order:

NTL Move or NTL Travel - "Linking researchers and knowledge to meet the
world's transportation needs" NTL Move or NTL Travel - "Moving you toward
the information (knowledge) you need." TranBase TranCat USA TranLine TranNet
Trans911 TransAgnoscere (Transportation Knowledge) TransAuxilium TransBase
- Transportation KnowledgeBase TransBiblio TransCodex TranSelect - Selected
Resources in Transportation TransGnoste TransLiber TransMovere (Moving
Transportation) TranspIRE - Transportation Information Resorce Exchange
Transport Select Transportation Select

I have elected not to include my favorite proposal that stuck (so to
speak) to the "cat" theme (being the most creative, if not the most useful
from a marketing standpoint), "HAIRBALL - Helping Agencies In Research by
Actively Locating Literature."

I would like to know if you have a preferred alternative of those presented
or might be able to suggest a short name, long name or both that might also
be considered for the product. In case you haven't seen it, you can connect
to it at www.mtkn.org, or ntl.bts.gov, among others.

Thank you for your kind assistance and advice!

How about TLCAT? It's nice to have something I can use for ILL, since we have no funds. or OCLC access. I do hope a major aviation library such as Embry-Riddle Aero Univ., National Air & Space Musuem Library & Archives, ect will get involved, so there will be more in aviation.

My biggest worry now is that the rest of us will relax, enjoying getting something for "free", and simply not fight the battle for funds in our own organizations. Yes,it is a battle--but every department, every manager is doing it, on a daily basis. That's what managing a unit within an organization is all about. To somehow believe that this can substitute for our own outfit's membership in OCLC is fantasy. Comfortable, but fantasy.

world) who may be weary of trying to figure out what a short, catchy type of
name actually means.

It's nice to have something I can use for ILL, since we
have no funds. or OCLC access. I do hope a major aviation library such as
Embry-Riddle Aero Univ., National Air & Space Musuem Library & Archives, ect
will get involved, so there will be more in aviation.

Maryanne is right...who cares about the name, this thing rocks!

Special thanks to Nelda for her tireless efforts to make TransCat a reality.
For those who are not aware, Nelda and the staff of the NTL have expended an
unbelievable amount of time and energy to make this a reality. Not to
mention money. Charter members of TransCat have had their way paid by
Nelda, and that will last until the end of February 2004. Simply put, if it
were not for the financial support of Nelda using NTL funds, this would not
exsit.

We should call it Nelda! Ok, how about NeldaCat.

Seriously, the other big player here is OCLC, who found a way to create an
affordable search tool that provides a fast, simple way to search the
holdings of all participants. Right now that's over 300,000 records
representing over 400,000 actual holdings. Stay posted. Those numbers will
grow.

If you are running a transportation library (anywhere on planet earth) that
does not participate in OCLC, you now have some nice ammunition to help make
that happen. By the end of the year, you will have even more ammo. Please
consider joining...

If you work in a transportation library that participates in a limited way
in OCLC but parts of your collection that you wish were in OCLC aren't yet,
this is excellent ammunition to help make that happen. Please consider
joining...

If you work in a transportation library that already does all these things
but are still on the fence, call Nelda and talk to her. Your return on
investment will become obvious in ways that can be quantified. Again, the
more libraries join, and the more records are contributed, the more powerful
this tool becomes, the more your library is valued, the more you get for
your money, and the more you "maximize" $ already spent on OCLC cataloging.

For those of you in the rest of the country (and anywhere on planet earth)
who do not understand the difference between MTKN and TransCat (or whatever
we are calling it tomorrow), please understand that MTKN and TransCat are
two separate entities.

Repeat, MTKN and TransCat are NOT the same thing.

If you want to join MTKN contact Jerry Baldwin.

If you want to join TransCat, call Nelda Bravo.

Now, back to the name...after careful consideration, the only logical name
should be an unpronounceable symbol. Or perhaps "The catalog formerly known
as TransCat."

Those numbers will
grow.

If you are running a transportation library (anywhere on planet earth) that
does not participate in OCLC, you now have some nice ammunition to help mak! e
that happen. By the end of the year, you will have even mor e ammo. Please

Again, the
more libraries join, and the more records are contributed, the more powerful
this tool becomes, the more your library is valued, the more you get for
your money, and the more you "maximize" $ already spent on OCLC cataloging.

can briefly summarize what it is, what libraries currently are included,

As you probably know, the Midwest Transportation Knowledge Network
(MTKN) worked with the National Transportation Library and OCLC to develop a
group catalog of transportation libraries, accessible to anyone on the
internet, that went live on March 1 (BTW, kudos to everyone involved,
especially Nelda ! Bravo and the NTL for providing seed money and leadership).

A n ecessary element for the group catalog is a name and a shortname.

NTL Move or NTL Travel - "Linking! researchers and knowledge to meet the
world's transportation needs" NTL Move or NTL Travel - "Moving you toward
the information (knowledge) you need." TranBase TranCat USA TranLine TranNet
Trans911 TransAgnoscere (Transportation Knowledge) TransAuxilium TransBase
- Transportation KnowledgeBase TransBiblio TransCodex TranSelect - Selected
Resources in Transportation TransGnoste TransLiber TransMovere (Moving
Transportation) TranspIRE - Transportation Information Resorce Exchange
Transport Select Transportation Select

I have elected not to include my favorite proposal that stuck (so to
speak) to the "cat" theme (being the most creative, if not the most useful
from a marketing standpoint), "HAIRBALL - Helping Agencies In Research by
Actively Locating Literature."

I would like to know if you have a preferred alternative of those presented
or might be able to suggest a short name, long name or both that might also
be consi! dered for the product. In case you haven't seen it, you can conn ect
to it at www.mtkn.org, or ntl.bts.gov, among others.

Thank you for your kind assistance and advice!

I vote for "Transportation Libraries Catalog" for all of the reasons
Maryanne Ward listed. I would prefer to call the catalog what it is.

No matter what short name we come up with that is a combination of partial
words that mean something to us, others will not understand what it means.

I did a web search of catalog names and there are duplications (as we found
out with TransCat). Other examples include:

CLIO - Columbia Libraries Information Online or Cooperating Libraries In
Olympia
ORBIS - Yale University Library Catalog or Oregon Academic Union Catalog
(now part of Summit)

There are other union catalogs that call the catalog what it is, but when
the name of the catalog needs to be shortened, use an acronym:

City University of New York Union Catalog - CUNY Union Catalog
New Hampshire Union Public Access Catalog - NHU-PAC

So if we officially called the catalog "Transportation Libraries Catalog"
but needed or wanted to abbreviate it for our own purposes (email
correspondence, webpage hypertext link, etc.) I don't see what would prevent
us from within our organizations (or internally on TRANLIB) referring to the
Transportation Libraries Catalog as TLC. I don't have a set, but I bet if we
looked up TLC in the Acronyms, Initialisms & Abbreviations Dictionary there
would be many entries listed for TLC. Therefore, I don't think we have to
worry about trademark/copyright infringement for using TLC as an
abbreviation.

So I would rather call a spade a spade or else pick a name that is a real
word.

Well, there are only 26 letters, after all, and there will be some duplication of efforts, but at least not in the same "domain". I think maybe the show is not too related to the serious business of transportation literature.

TLC is already taken by a show on HGTV.

>>> Carol.Paszamant@DOT.STATE.NJ.US 3/22/2004 3:17:54 PM >>>

Or how about TranLibCat, a hybrid of the full name and the shorter versions? Or really shorten it to TLC.

How about TLCAT? It's nice to have something I can use for ILL, since we
have no funds. or OCLC access. I do hope a major aviation library such as
Embry-Riddle Aero Univ., National Air & Space Musuem Library & Archives, ect
will get involved, so there will be more in aviation.

Maryanne is right...who cares about the name, this thing rocks!

Special thanks to Nelda for her tireless efforts to mak! e TransCat a reality.

Those numbers will
grow.

If you are running a transportation library (anywhere on planet earth) that
does not participate in OCLC, you now have some nice ammunition to help mak! e
that happen. By the end of the year, you will have even mor e ammo. Please
consider joining...

For those of you in the rest of the country (and anywhere on planet earth)
who do not understand the difference between MTKN and TransCat (or whatever
we are calling it tomorrow), please understand! that MTKN and TransCat are
two separate entities.

Is i t absolutely necessary to have a short, catchy type of name? I'm
thinking of all the potential users (after all,I understand that this is
available to everybody who has internet, at this point, anywhere in the
world) who may be weary of trying to figure out what a short, catchy type of
name actually means.

From my vantage point (of being in the trenches for a very long
time with resources of varying usefulness), it is almost beyo! nd belief. I
hope all transportation librarians not only use it as a matter of course,
but add a link to their internal intranet homepages for staffs, etc. etc.
etc. I really have to bow down in praise to Nelda and all the MTKN folks who
put this together.

NTL Move or NTL Travel - "Linking! researchers and knowledge to meet the
world's transportation needs" NTL Move or NTL Travel - "Moving you toward
the information (knowledge) you need." TranBase TranCat USA TranLine TranNet
Trans911 TransAgnoscere (Transportation Knowledge) TransAuxilium TransBase
- Transportation KnowledgeBase TransBiblio TransCodex TranSelect - Selected
Resources in Transportation TransGnoste TransLiber TransMovere (Moving
Transportation) TranspIRE - Transportation Information Resorce Exchange
Transport Select Transportation Select

I have elected not to include my favorite proposal that stuck (so to
speak) to the "cat" theme (being the most creative, if not the most useful
from a marketing standpoint), "HAIRBALL - Helping Agencies In Research by
Actively Locating Literature."

I would like to know if you have a preferred alternative of those presented
or might be able to suggest a short name, long name or both that might also
be consi! dered for the product. In case you haven't seen it, you can conn ect
to it at www.mtkn.org, or ntl.bts.gov, among others.

Thank you for your kind assistance and advice!

Which is why I believe we should just go with the "real" words. Why not?
They say what we want to say, do what we want to do. They are unambiguous
and liable to come up pretty near the top on most searches.

One of the things we were shooting for is originality. Google returns
1,940,000 items with TLC in the title and the same number with TLC in the
URL. I think we now know the maximum number of returns Google will provide.
