Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of any bridge design software programs, especially those which deal with design of structural members?

I can pull down lists and links of software from the Internet, which is a start, but I'm looking for more evaluative information.

Thanks for any help,

Our librarian Betty Lou Hicks forwarded your message to me. I am a
structural engineer and can tell you a little about what we use for
structural analysis.

For general structural analysis and design we use RISA 3-D by Risa
Technologies. For bridge girder design/analysis we use Merlin-Dash or
MDX.

Other general structural packages that are very good are STAAD-PRO and
SAP 9000.

Hope you find this useful

Hello,
I am searching for the following: "In New Zealand a study has been performed
that concluded that seatbelts are not necessary on buses. There were
apparently 3 reports: a "Yellow Book," a "Green Book," and a "Red Book."

Any assistance would be appreciated.

FYI - Mn/DOT's support of the NTL and transportation-related library
services made it into our "official" one-pager on our department's
positions on the topic. Of course, it was the last item, but it made
it. If you're asked for information on the what your department might
say, you might want to adapt what we have at

Fellow TRANLIBers,

As we all deal with overflowing In boxes, remember some guidelines to make use of the TRANLIB discussion list a better experience for everyone:

Does Everyone Need to Read This? - If you decide to REPLY to a message, before you hit the "Send" button, always ask yourself, "Do I want to reply to the entire list, or just the sender?" Very often it's only the sender; don't inundate everyone if only one person needs to see your reply.

And if you slip (aka, "pull a Nelda"), don't compound the error by sending everyone an apology -- we know what you did, and dealing with a second message is just twice as annoying.

Items to Give Away - If you've got duplicate or other items you want to give away, put a line at the top of your message, "Reply to me directly off-list:" followed by your email address so responders don't have to look for it. While it may make sense to let everyone know when the freebies have all been given away, we don't all need to see who's asking for what.

Responding to Requests - If you can supply an answer or an item, reply directly to the requester, not to the list.

Subject Lines - We all enjoy a little mystery in our lives, but subject headings such as "ILL Request," "Help!" "References," and "Need Assistance" are unnecessarily obtuse. Be brief, but be descriptive. "Looking for ASTM B 6-00," or "Help! re 1961 Standard Specifications for Construction of Roads," are both much more useful than generic subjects.

Thank you for your cooperation.

And thanks to Rita Evans, UC-Berkeley/TD Secretary-Treasurer for text.

FYI - Mn/DOT's support of the NTL and transportation-related library
services made it into our "official" one-pager on our department's
positions on the topic. Of course, it was the last item, but it made
it. If you're asked for information on the what your department might
say, you might want to adapt what we have at

We used to subscribe to two serials put out by John A. Dash &
Associates:

Rail operators' top hourly wage rates
Full-time bus operators' top hourly wage rates

We have resubscribed but won't receive an issue for a couple of weeks
while they process our order. My boss needs to see a recent copy
right away and I tried OCLC but couldn't find them. Does anyone get
this who could fax or mail us a recent one?

Dear Seyem,

Thanks for your reminder.

I have looked at the link you have to Elsevier as a Sponsor of the SLA TD.
NB we are no longer Elsevier Science, just plain "Elsevier" these days.
Also, while the link you have to our main catalogue page is fine, perhaps it
would be more helpful to TD members to link to the Transportation and/or the
Library & Information Science sec

I'm looking for ASTM A305 from 1959 or 1960. I have a 1953 T version from "ASTM Standards in Building Codes" dated 1955 but I need the version from 1959 or 1960. If you have the individual volumes from the early years , it might be in volume 4 (or 1, 2, or 3).

A305 is titled Specification for Minimum Requirements for the Deformations of Deformed Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement .

I can submit an ALA form and pay a fee.

I am looking for Table 4 in part 1 (Standard sizes of processed

SLA is strongly recommending that all non-Canadians carry a passport with them for crossing into Canada. When asked, you are a conference attendee/delegate, even if you are also a speaker; just say attendee or delegate. Also, when asked for your job title, say librarian, even if you are officially something other than that, i.e. Knowledge Manager, Web Manager, etc. This will make your crossing much faster and less stressful. Customs Officers understand Librarian, not Knowledge Manager. SLA has an official letter from Canada Customs acknowledging that they are aware of the conference. If you would feel more secure carrying this letter with you as you pass through Customs, please contact SLA and they will send you a copy. Canada Customs is usually pretty easy about conference attendees crossing into Canada so you probably won't have any problems. These suggestions are just to make it as smooth as possible for you.
Also, if you are bringing across any conference material ( such as session handouts) be sure to declare them as 'zero value' - you'll have a much easier time.

Does anyone subscribe to MasterFormat? It is produced jointly by CSI and CSC; it is a set of construction specifications. I am looking for Division 28: Electronic Safety and Security information, from the 2004 edition.

Good afternoon-

MaineDOT is putting together a committee to consider management of its
digital assets. Somehow I landed on the committee, which makes me anxious
to find out what others out there are doing about this problem, if anything.

We are concerned about the many pictures being taken with digital cameras,
as well as about items stored in all kinds of different places on our
servers, such as our bike map book, things in pdf format, newsletters,
brochures, audio-visual products, powerpoints, logos, graphics, etc., etc.
Lots of materials, lots of chaos...so we are looking for a way to
consolidate information about these assets and eventually to provide
searchable access for our departmental community.

Have organizations out there tackled this, especially other DOTs? Any
direction or discussion would be useful. And I'm curious about the
involvement of other librarians with this kind of thing.

Thanks-

Pam,

Pasted below is an (edited) email from February 2004 that touches on some of
these issues. To my knowledge, this hasn't gone anywhere yet at WSDOT (or at
least not at the Materials Laboratory).

Rebecca Christie
Librarian, Materials Laboratory
Washington State Department of Transportation

...George has developed an online media library cataloging tool that might
be of great use to us with all the digital images and other electronic
resources we have and continue to accumulate. The idea is to upload images
and other resources with keywords and brief descriptions that can later be
used to search for them. Experts can add additional information to the
resources for other use. George has a sample on the UW web. What we need
to have this here in the lab is a SQL Server database and plenty of storage

Siva -

Yesterday I had mentioned the online media library that I put together for
USDOT. I think this could be very useful in organizing pavement photos,
creating a pavement distress collection, or for personal use. Anyway I just
wanted to pass the link along to you so you could check it out. The beta
site is at http://asphalt.ce.washington.edu/MediaLibrary. It currently
contains a lot of Scott's images, PowerPoint slides and video. In order to
use the upload feature you have to log in... Let me know what you think.

Thanks-

The Strathcona is quite close to the centre. So is the Royal York but it's expensive. The Hilton Toronto is also reasonably close - it's just down the street from me on Richmond and the Sheraton Centre is also within stomping distance but a block further away across from city hall on Queen Street.

Good morning, all - I've received a copy of The Grey House Transportation Security Directory & Handbook to review for 30 days. The price tag is hefty by the standards of my budget, at $195. I checked FirstSearch to see who else owns this, and found that the book isn't in OCLC yet. Is there anyone else out there who is familiar with this title and can give me more information about how it is or will be used in your organization? Or, anyone else who previewed it and elected not to purchase it - and why? Please reply to me off-list at marie.manthe@ksdot.org. Thanks so much, and have a good day!

...George has developed an online media library cataloging tool that might
be of great use to us with all the digital images and other electronic
resources we have and continue to accumulate. The idea is to upload images
and other resources with keywords and brief descriptions that can later be
used to search for them. Experts can add additional information to the
resources for other use. George has a sample on the UW web. What we need
to have this here in the lab is a SQL Server database and plenty of storage
which we will have soon for the WebWSPMS deployment. Interestingly, there
is an article in the latest WST2 Newsletter
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/TA/T2Center/T2Bulletin-archives/2003-04winter.pdf

Hello Tranlibbers-

MaineDOT seems to be on a big information quest these days, so I have yet
another question, this one for DOTs only.

Our Human Resources division is focusing on what should realistically and
properly be our level of training here-the total expenditures we should
expect to invest.

Could you have your HR or financial section or whoever would know pass on to
me what information is available from your department on this? Our HR
specialist tells me that he can compare apples and oranges just as long as
it's made clear what the measurements are.

The percentage of the total payroll that is dedicated to training (include a
description of what defines "training") would work. A ballpark figure and
how it's related to your department's entire budget, or just to the
personnel budget would too. Or any other description your department has
come up with...

Thanks very much-

Hello-
The Terrestrial Biology Program Coordinator at the OR Dept. of Transportation wants to discuss migratory bird programs with her counterparts in other state DOTs. Chris is quite new to ODOT, and hasn't had time to do much networking yet, so she has asked me to see if I could come up with any contacts for her. Could any of you provide some contact information for ones involved in such environmental programs for your agencies?
Thanks so much!

Hello-
I know there was a recent inquiry about methods used to prequalify contractors, but I am looking for information on another aspect of contracting practices. Contracts at the Oregon Dept. of Transportation are centralized, and handled for all sections by the Procurement unit. They are working to establish a set of "Best Practices" for their operations, and would be interested in learning how other state DOTs handle contracts/contractors/procurements. They are looking for information on how the organization is structured to do procurements (i.e. is it centralized, or is each section responsible for its own contracting?). Most specifically, they are interested in: construction contracts, Goods & Trades Service (GTS) contracts, Personal Service contracts (PSK) and Architectural & engineering (A&E) contracts.
This may be a very multi-faceted request, depending on your organization's structure, but any information would be appreciated! Replies can be made directly to:

Jason,

I don't know if you have time or interest in responding to this request.. If you do be sure to address it to Laura Wilt. If you do a general reply it will go out on a list serve. I thought since Nebraska is a major migratory route we could be of help .

Thanks,

Mary

Hello-
The Terrestrial Biology Program Coordinator at the OR Dept. of Transportation wants to discuss migratory bird programs with her counterparts in other state DOTs. Chris is quite new to ODOT, and hasn't had time to do much networking yet, so she has asked me to see if I could come up with any contacts for her. Could any of you provide some contact information for ones involved in such environmental programs for your agencies?
Thanks so much!

Good morning-

I have had the following request from one of our highway engineers:

"Will you send out an inquiry to other State DOT's
to find out if any of them have a data system to manage the DBE usage on
their contracts? We are looking for the agreement amounts, the regular
progress payment amounts and the final closed out amounts." Also, could you
"find out if they have a Civil Rights Program manual and if they would be
willing to send us one of theirs?"

Replies can go directly to Holly.anderson@Maine.gov
  with a copy to me,
Pamela.shofner@maine.gov .

Thanks for your assistance-

Pam Shofner

Thanks, Roger! I just sent a link to the first item to every
non-librarian on my contacts list. Perchance it's time we all tried to
beat the opposition at it's own game.
