| ISTTT 2011 Publications Expanded: The organizers of the 19th International Symposium on Transportation and Traffic Theory (ISTTT) are pleased to announce that all papers accepted for the 2011 symposium in Berkeley, California, USA, will be published both in symposium proceedings and in the journal series Transportation Research, Parts A-F. Two Key Newell Publications Now Available Online: Professor Gordon F. Newell's two monographs, Theory of Highway Traffic Flow 1945-1965 (UCB-ITS-CN-95-1) and Theory of Highway Traffic Signals (UCB-ITS-RR-89-7) are now available online in PDF format. "These documents reflect Gordon Newell's personal take on the early developments in traffic flow theory, from the perspective of a pioneer, and his unique insights into traffic signal operations. These valuable resources, full of ideas, can now be shared around the world," noted Professor Carlos F. Daganzo, a colleague of Newell's and a traffic flow theorist.

| ITS Headline pick for November 6: Grand Plans for Rail in Denver Hit a Wall of Fiscal Realities: Voters in 2004 approved a $4.7 billion, 122-mile rail project; costs are now expected to be $7 billion. Most of the lines are still on the drawing board...New research about the recession has also bolstered one of transit’s central premises — that highway-driven sprawl is bad for a city’s economic health. Recent studies at the University of Utah, for example, concluded that foreclosure rates in the Washington area were much lower in counties served by the Metro rail system, compared with the next ring of counties farther out, and that home prices in Phoenix had also fallen in direct proportion to the distance from downtown.
