Jan. 5, 2009—Robert Cervero, professor of city and regional planning, has been approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation to succeed Elizabeth Deakin, a professor of city and regional planning and urban design, as director of the University of California Transportation Center (UCTC). ITS Director Samer Madanat made the announcement in a message to faculty, students and staff.

Deakin will step down at the end of her 10th year in the post, after a transition over spring semester, which is expected to be complete on March 1.

"Please join me in congratulating Robert on this important appointment and in thanking Betty for her outstanding service to the transportation community at the University of California," Madanat wrote.

UCTC was established in 1987 as the Federal Region IX University Transportation Center (UTC) and as the statewide UTC for California. It is a multi-campus research unit and is supported in equal parts by the United States Department of Transportation and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
