A team from the National Center of Excellence for Operations Research (NEXTOR)—Ph.D. student Tatjana Bolic and Mark Hansen, associate professor of civil engineering and Director of NEXTOR Berkeley—won Best Paper Prize in the Human Factors category at the 6th meeting of the USA/Europe Seminar on Air Traffic Management Research and Development. The prize was announced on the last day of the seminar, which ran from June 27-30, 2005, in Baltimore, MD.

The paper, "User Request Evaluation Tool (URET) Adoption and Adaptation; Three Center Case Study," presents "findings of exploratory interviews regarding the air traffic controllers’ adoption and adaptation of User Request Evaluation Tool (URET)," the authors write. "The goal of this research is to draw lessons from the experience with URET that can inform technology deployments in the future."

The seminar, which has been held previously in Budapest, Hungary, in June 2003, Santa Fe, New Mexico, in December 2001, Napoli, Italy, in June 2000, Orlando, Florida, in December 1998 and in Saclay, France, in June 1997, is intended to " foster the realization of a harmonized global Air Traffic Management system," the organizer write in their Call for Papers. It is organized jointly by the Federal Aviation Administration and the EUROCONTROL Organization.
