news>>harley joins its advisory council Robert Harley, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has joined the ITS Advisory Council, ITS Director Samer Madanat announced at the council’s annual meeting on May 7. Harley, whose expertise includes air quality engineering and air pollution modeling, brings the number of members on the council to eight. Council members come from academia as well as the transportation industry, governmental agencies, and metropolitan planning agencies. They share a common interest in forward-thinking transportation research. Madanat told council members that the addition of Harley "emphasizes our growing interest at ITS in the environmental impacts of transportation." The most recent center to join the ITS family, the Transportation Sustainability Research Center, reflects the Institute’s interest in this aspect of transportation, he added. During the daylong meeting, a number of faculty and researchers presented highlights of the research they have been involved with over the previous year. These included research projects conducted by PATH, the Traffic Safety Center, the Volvo Center, NEXTOR, and the Transportation Sustainability Research Center.
