Adib Kanafani, former director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and former chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where he is Edward G. and John R. Cahill Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been chosen to serve on the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He will be formally introduced as an Executive Committee member during TRB's 2003 Annual Meeting in January, which is held in Washington, D.C.

The official announcement from TRB described the committee's responsibilities: "The policies and activities of the Transportation Research Board are determined and directed by its Executive Committee acting within the overall policies of The National Academies. Executive Committee members are appointed with the approval of the chairman of the National Research Council. The Executive Committee is composed of about 25 individuals from government, industry, and academia who are active in the areas of interest of TRB, and a variable number of ex-officio members."

Kanafani, who chaired the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department from November 1997 to July 2002, joins ITS Berkeley Director Martin Wachs as the second ITS Berkeley faculty member on the TRB Executive Committee.
