news>>awards>>kanafani elected to national academy February 2002Professor Adib Kanafani, former director of the Institute of Transportation Studies and Edward G. and John R. Cahill Professor of Civil Engineering and Chairman of the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Kanafani was chosen for his significant contributions to national and international air transportation, the development of U.S. research on intelligent transportation, and the education of transportation professionals. The National Academy of Engineering is part of the National Academies, which includes the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council. The academy was founded in 1964 to provide engineering leadership in service to the nation. In addition to its role as advisor to the federal government, the NAE also conducts independent studies to examine important topics in engineering and technology. The NAE has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and foreign associates, senior professionals in business, academia, and government who are among the world's most accomplished engineers. They provide the leadership and expertise for numerous projects focused on the relationships between engineering, technology, and the quality of life. Professor Kanafani is now the fourth member of the NAE from the active faculty of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. The other three members are Professor Robert Bea, Professor Anil Chopra and Professor William Webster. Nineteen UCB Civil and Environmental Engineering professors emeritus also serve in the NAE (from the College of Engineering News Highlights). | ||
