Juan Carlos Munoz was awarded the first Gordon Newell Fellowship on Friday, March 22, 2002. The award, which is given to an outstanding graduate student in transportation, is intended to honor Newell, a professor emeritus of transportation engineering at UC Berkeley who died in an automobile accident in February 2001 at the age of 76. Munoz is a candidate for a Ph.D. in civil engineering. Carlos Daganzo, professor of civil engineering, and Newell's widow, Barbara, presented the award.
