Getting stuck in traffic behind a bus could soon be a lot less stressful in Contra Costa County, with nine hybrid buses hitting the streets by the end of May thanks to federal and state funding. County Connection already has rolled out 31 new cleaner-burning diesel buses, and the hybrids are the pièce de résistance of the agency's new fleet of 40 vehicles. The total cost for all the new buses was $18.8 million, 80 percent of which came from the Federal Transit Administration, with 20 percent funded by money from a 2006 state transportation ballot measure, Proposition 1B and bridge tolls.
