Areas of expertise include advanced vehicle technologies and clean energy systems. Current projects include: sustainable mobility, including transit connectivity, alternative fuels, goods movement, intelligent transportation systems, and mobility for special populations, areas that she has researched as founder and head of the Innovative Mobility Research Center, which is now housed at TSRC. Before joining TSRC, she served for four years as the program leader for Policy and Behavioral Research at the Institute of Transportation Studies' California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH). She earned her Ph.D. in ecology from UC Davis, and joined UC Berkeley in 2000 as a post-doctoral researcher at PATH. Shaheen holds a joint appointment with the Institute of Transportation Studies-Davis, where she co-leads the transportation track of the Energy Efficiency Center. In 2000 she was named the Honda Distinguished Scholar in Transportation.
